Lemon oil properties and uses. Lemon essential oil: properties and uses, masks for the face and hair. Application in cosmetology

Mankind has known about the beneficial properties of lemon oil since ancient times: in Egypt and India, ethers were worth their weight in gold and were available only to representatives of the wealthy strata of the population. Today they are sold in pharmacies and supermarkets at quite affordable prices. To use this tool correctly, you need to know how to choose a quality product, how to store it and what is its benefit to the body.

Lemon oil: general characteristics

Oils obtained from herbs, fruits and plants, people began to use as early as three millennia BC. e. On the shores of the Nile, Indus and even in neighboring China, lemons were grown for ether in the Bronze Age. Later, the ancient Greeks and Romans learned about it. In Egypt, oils, including lemon, were comparable in value to gold. They were used both in pure form and as a base for hair and skin care products. The rooms were perfumed with ether and clothes were treated. Valuable oils were used during religious ceremonies and added to mixtures to embalm rulers. The Egyptians consumed lemon concentrate in food for poisoning with meat or fish and for the treatment of typhoid.

The powerful antiviral and bactericidal properties of lemon ether were already known to the inhabitants of Ancient Egypt: in order to avoid poisoning, they sprinkled their food

The ancient Greeks and Romans began to study the properties of various oils in more detail and discovered that lemon is a powerful antiseptic. Ester-based recipes have been used to treat many ailments and battle wounds. Official medicine recognized the healing properties of citrus oil only by the beginning of the 18th century.

The knowledge of the ethers came to the European continent thanks to the crusaders. The main producer of citrus oil was originally Italy, and now the product is being extracted throughout the Mediterranean coast, California, Southeast Asia, China and Morocco.

How to choose a quality broadcast

Organic lemon oil is suitable for skin care and aromatherapy. Avoid using synthetic or diluted esters. Do not buy lemon oil, which is obtained by distillation (evaporation), as it does not have the required amount of beneficial properties.

Storage rules

It is recommended to keep lemon oil in a cold place after opening the bottle. So it retains its properties for a year. This also applies to the esters of orange, lime, mandarin, bergamot. Other concentrates are also recommended to be kept in the refrigerator for two years. At a temperature of about + 10 ° C, lemon oil retains its properties for six months. Esters deteriorate on exposure to air from the moment the bottle is opened.

Store the oil in a dark place, away from direct sunlight. It is advisable that the temperature in the room is not higher than +10 o C. To prevent the oils from being saturated with the smells of other products, put the bottles in a box or sealed container. Tighten the lid of the ether container thoroughly after each use. After the first use, it is recommended to affix a shelf life tag to the packaging. When it comes to an end, the oil can be poured into an aroma lamp and used to scent rooms, but it is better not to apply it to the skin, as the risk of allergies from using such oil increases.

You should be aware of the signs by which you can determine that the lemon ether has deteriorated:

  1. Look at the clarity and color of the oil. If the liquid looks cloudy, it is not recommended to use it.
  2. Lemon ether, when spoiled, loses its pronounced aroma, can acquire bad smell or get sticky.

Product types

Lemon oil is obtained in two ways: by cold pressing or by distillation (distillation).

Distillation for the extraction of ethers was used 5 thousand years ago. Currently, this method remains the most popular. The cold pressed method is used to extract all citrus concentrates. Initially, this was done by hand: the zest was soaked to make the oil easier to separate, the liquid was collected in a sponge, and then squeezed out, extracting valuable esters.

The modern method of obtaining concentrates is less laborious. The fruits are placed in a container with thorns, pushed and pierced so that the oil collects in a special container underneath. For cosmetic purposes, it is recommended to choose ether, which is extracted by pressing, since part of the useful properties of the product is lost during distillation.

Use of the concentrate in medicine

Lemon oil cannot replace the full treatment of acute respiratory infections, flu and other more dangerous diseases, but its use is combined with the use of medications to combat ailments

Doctors recognize the beneficial properties of esters, but it is worth adhering to a compromise point of view: oils are used to promote health, but going to the hospital is mandatory for the treatment of serious diseases. At the same time, the use of pharmacy ointments and tablets can and should be combined with inhalations and baths, if there are no contraindications to the procedures.

The use of oil for cosmetic purposes

The most popular way to use the oil is to add it to homemade cosmetics.

Face formulation recipes

Lemon ether exfoliates dead skin cells and gives the skin a well-groomed look. The product is especially useful for owners of oily skin, as the concentrate cleanses it and fights inflammation. The oil restores capillaries, eliminates calluses, growths and warts.

For acne treatment

The antiseptic properties of lemon oil are used in the treatment of acne. This ester is a rich source of antioxidants and vitamin C. Thanks to these components, the product fights against the causes of acne: bacteria and microbes. The substances contained in the oil regulate the production of sebum and increase the level of collagen (a protein responsible for skin repair, its firmness and elasticity). Thanks to this, acne marks are smoothed out.

For acne, try this recipe:

  1. Add two drops of lemon ether to an empty container.
  2. Pour 8-10 drops of coconut oil into it and stir.
  3. Rinse your face with warm water.
  4. Apply the mixture to your skin and let it dry (this will take about 20 minutes).
  5. Rinse off the composition with water.

Coconut oil has many beneficial ingredients that improve the condition of the skin of the face

To brighten the epidermis

Lemon oil contains citric acid, which helps to safely and gently fight skin hyperpigmentation. Ether has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It helps to restore damaged melanin cells (the pigment responsible for the color of the skin, hair and eyes). When the epidermis is exposed to sunlight too often, estrogen and progesterone are destroyed. Lemon oil penetrates the skin, helping cells to regenerate and normalizing acidity. So the epidermis becomes lighter, the spots disappear.

  1. Pour two to three drops of lemon ether into a bowl.
  2. Add half a teaspoon of any base oil (such as almond or grape seed).
  3. Pour a tablespoon of baking soda into a separate container and pour in a glass of warm water.
  4. Stir to make a solution.
  5. Wash, cleanse the skin in the usual way (foam or gel).
  6. Apply lemon mixture gently.
  7. Leave it to dry (about 20-25 minutes).
  8. Wash yourself with warm water.

Almond oil has emollient and moisturizing properties that protect the skin from age-related changes, brightens it and evens out the tone

Since soda has a strong drying effect, it is impossible to apply the product to dry and sensitive skin. In this case, it is recommended to replace it with a double portion of the base or add lemon oil to the toner for daily rubdown.

This remedy can also be used to treat acne and pimple marks.

For oily skin care

Lemon oil is a powerful agent for reducing sebum production. It has a strong astringent property, due to which the pores are narrowed, the oiliness of the skin is reduced, it takes on a more well-groomed appearance. To obtain this effect, use the following composition:

  1. Fill the glass clean water by a quarter.
  2. Add 6-7 drops of lemon ether and 1-2 drops of jojoba oil and stir.
  3. Wash your face with warm water, apply the composition (do not rub the skin, as this will injure it).
  4. Leave this lotion on for 7-10 minutes.
  5. Rinse your face with cool water.

Jojoba oil provides quality care for oily to combination skin

Olive oil is ideal for the care of aging skin as it softens, moisturizes and helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

Cellulite

Lemon oil stimulates the lymphatic system. The body gets rid of toxins and cellulite becomes less pronounced over time. To combat this problem, lemon concentrate is added to the base product and used as a compress, as well as rubbed into the skin. For these purposes, you can apply the following mixture:

  1. 3-4 drops of lemon ether are combined with 1⁄2 cup of base oil (for example, grape seeds).
  2. The composition is applied to the affected area and allowed to dry for 25 minutes.

Grape seed oil is effective for cellulite, helps to get rid of rosacea, varicose veins, makes the walls of blood vessels more elastic, activating blood circulation

For hands, nails and cuticles

  3. Dip your hands in the tub and rub the citrus on your nails and the skin around them.
  4. Dry your hands with a clean towel and apply olive oil to them (you can add a few drops of lemon ether to it if necessary).

Using lemon as a nail care product allows you to add shine to the nail plate, clean it and make it more elastic.

You can also use another nail hardener:

  1. Mix about 15 drops of lavender ether, 9 drops of lemon, 4–5 drops of myrrh and 1 tablespoon each of almond and olive oil.
  2. Pour the mixture into a dark glass bottle and shake well.
  3. Leave the bottle in a dark place overnight to mix the ingredients well.

The same recipe is great for the care of nails and skin on the legs, but the oils will be needed more (about three times). This mixture will last more than one month of daily use. Such saturated formulations are not recommended for pregnant women, lactating women and people with allergies. Although these oils do not have side effects, an allergic reaction test should be performed.

To lighten the strands, the concentrate is added to home rinses: for one glass of water, take 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and three drops of lemon ether. Of course, turning from a brunette to a blonde with the help of such a tool will not work, but it is quite possible to lighten the hair by 1-2 tones with regular use.

How to add concentrate to cosmetics

Steinberg, the work has not yet been translated into Russian) writes that oils of cumin, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, rose, rosemary, sage, sandalwood and thyme have excellent antimicrobial properties. Unfortunately, the concentration required to adequately protect a product from bacterial growth typically exceeds the safe recommended limits for essential oils in skin and hair care products.

It is advisable to prepare such funds immediately before use. Home-made oil mixtures (for example, hand compositions) are stored in dark glass bottles for no more than six months. It is believed that the shelf life of purchased cosmetics is extended by six months due to the additional properties of the esters added to them, but using cosmetics after the expiration date is still not recommended for safety reasons.

Lemon ester works well with the following oils:

  • benzoin;
  • ylang-ylang;
  • ginger;
  • cardamom;

For the skin reaction test, the oil mixture is prepared in the same manner as for the olfactory test. Not a large number of the composition is applied to the area behind the ear, the inner part of the elbow or on the wrist. If after a day signs of allergy (redness, itching) do not appear, then lemon oil can be used for baths, rubbing or applied to the skin as part of other cosmetics.

Before applying lemon oil externally, it is imperative to test for an allergic skin reaction

Lemon oil is used internally for medicinal purposes. An allergy test must be performed before this. To do this, add a drop of lemon ether to a tablespoon of olive or sunflower oil, after which a drop of such a mixture is poured into a teaspoon of jam. This "lemon" jam is consumed three times a day, the next day the test is carried out with a double portion of the mixture of oils. You can use the product internally if during this time there are no signs of allergies such as:

If lemon oil comes into contact with mucous membranes, it is irritating, so avoid contact with the eyes and nose.

The use of lemon oil in cosmetology

Lemon essential oil is widely used for cosmetic purposes in almost all areas.

Lemon oil is used on hair for different purposes: to strengthen it, improve growth, recover from dyeing and other damage, to prevent section breakage, or simply to make it shiny and healthy. But lemon oil can be applied to hair and to lighten it in several shades. I would like to note right away that such lightening can only be used by natural blondes, since brown-haired women can end up with an unwanted shade.

Recipe for gentle hair lightening

To prepare a clarifying mixture, you must combine 5 drops of lemon oil with 1 tbsp. vodka. The resulting mixture is applied to the hair and left for 40 minutes, after which it is washed off with water. It is recommended to go out into the sun or a solarium after the procedure, the lightening effect will increase. Although this hair lightening with lemon oil is considered gentle, it should not be carried out too often, this can negatively affect the condition of the scalp: dandruff and itching are possible. In this regard, the procedure can be carried out no more than once a week.

A fairly large number of women use various masks based on lemon essential oil, and this is no coincidence, since this component is suitable for absolutely any type of skin, except for very dry skin. Their composition basically boils down to using a certain base component, and adding a few drops of lemon oil to it. Differently designed masks do more than just improve appearance and the condition of the skin of the face, as well as get rid of acne, wrinkles, age spots and other troubles.

Recipe for a whitening mask against age spots, freckles and acne marks

To prepare the mixture, you need to combine only two components: 1 tbsp. sea buckthorn oil and 2 drops of lemon oil. The resulting substance is evenly applied to the previously cleansed skin of the face and kept for 15 minutes. Then the mask is washed off with warm water, and a cream is applied to the skin. To achieve a whitening effect, such a mask must be done at least once a week.

In order to rejuvenate and refresh the skin, as well as smooth out wrinkles on the face, you can prepare a mask based on a mixture of honey (1 tablespoon) and warmed milk (0.5 tablespoons), then add lemon essential oil (2 drops) and apply to cleansed skin. Honey should be liquid, therefore, if it is thick, it is recommended to warm it up in a water bath. The mask must be kept for 15 minutes and then washed off with water. To smooth out wrinkles around the eyes, such a mask is not suitable; when applying the mixture, this area must be avoided. To achieve the effect, this procedure is usually carried out twice a week.

For the skin of the feet and hands

When carrying out procedures to improve the condition of the skin of the hands and feet, it is possible not only to achieve the desired effect, but also to enjoy the pleasant aromas of the essential oils that are part of the cosmetic substances.

For such a mask, you will need to mix a glass of milk, one raw egg, 1 tbsp. vodka, 0.5 cups lemon juice and 1 drop of lemon essential oil and mix everything well until a homogeneous consistency is obtained.
