The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will start on August 5 and run until August 21. More than 10 thousand athletes from 207 countries will take part in the 2016 Games. Fortunately, for the 2016 Olympics - albeit not in full force - whose participation in the Games was questionable until the last moment due to a doping scandal. True, the cut-down composition of the Russian national team is unlikely to be able to count on winning the medal standings of the 2016 Olympics - the athletics team has been removed from the competition in its entirety, in addition, dozens of representatives of the Russian national team will not go to Rio, who could claim awards in other events Olympic program.

How many sets of medals will be awarded at the 2016 Olympics?

Meanwhile, at the 2016 Olympics, 306 sets of medals will be played in 28 sports. Most of the sets of awards - 47 - will be played by athletes, among whom there is only one representative of Russia - Daria Klishina. Swimmers will compete for 34 sets of awards, 18 sets will be awarded in wrestling and cycling, 16 in kayaking and canoeing, 14 in gymnastics, judo and rowing each, 15 in each in bullet shooting and weightlifting, 13 in boxing , 10 each - in fencing and sailing. We have listed the most medal-intensive types - less than a dozen sets of medals are played in other sports.

Rio medal prediction

Naturally, fans are interested in forecast for the 2016 Olympics - who will win how many medals? The favorites in the fight for victory in the medal standings of the 2016 Olympics are the Chinese team and the US team. Americans are traditionally strong in athletics, where, moreover, there will be no Russians. But for the Russian national team - taking into account the disqualification - it will be a success to get into the top five of the final medal standings of the 2016 Games. Our competitors are Great Britain, Germany, France and South Korea. Recall that at the previous 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the Russian national team took 4th place in the medal standings, having won 23 gold, 25 silver and 32 bronze medals (80 in total). The Americans won in the overall standings (46 + 28 + 29 - a total of 103 medals), ahead of the Chinese (38 + 29 + 21 - 88 in total) and the British (29 + 17 + 19 - 65 in total). Note that in the medal standings, the teams are distributed according to the number of gold medals, and only if they are equal are silver medals (and only the equality of gold and silver is considered bronze).

The 2020 Summer Olympics will be held in the Japanese capital Tokyo. This is the second time the city will host one of the world's major sporting events. For the first time, the Summer Olympic Games were held here in 1964. In general, Japan is an experienced host of the Olympics. This country has already hosted the Winter Games twice - in Sapporo in 1972 and in Nagano in 1998. It is curious that Japan was preparing to host the competition back in 1940: the Summer Olympic Games were to be held in Tokyo, and the Winter Olympics in Sapporo. But neither one nor the other took place because of the outbreak of World War II.

What sports will we see at the Olympics?

At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, 339 sets of awards will be played in 33 sports. This is more than at the last Olympics in Rio. Then 306 sets of medals were played in 28 types. Karate, surfing, rock climbing, skateboarding and baseball were added to the number of sports specifically for the Tokyo Games (in women's competitions it will be represented by its kind - softball). True, it is worth noting: despite the fact that medals in these five sports will be played in Japan, it is far from a fact that they will remain in the program of the next Olympics.

The rest of the sports events that took place in 2016 will remain in Tokyo. Some new disciplines have been added, but there are no fundamental changes compared to the last Olympiad.

Who is the contender for the medal leadership?

The list of contenders for the first place in the unofficial medal standings, admittedly, is rather short. In the entire history of the Summer Olympic Games, only a few countries were able to become the best.

  • The USA is the undisputed leader in medal championship in the entire history of the Olympics, far ahead of the rest of the pursuers. It was the athletes from the United States who won the overall classification of the very first modern Olympic Games. On the whole, few could compete with them until the mid-1950s. Accordingly, before each new competition, both experts and fans most often make predictions in favor of the United States.
  • The USSR is the second most successful team at the Summer Games. Soviet athletes began to really effectively fight for medals in the second half of the century and even headed the medal standings for three Olympics in a row (1972, 1976 and 1980). Moreover, from the middle of the last century to the beginning of the 21st century, only the USSR and the USA won the overall standings. True, in the early 90s, the CIS team officially did this, since the USSR had already ceased to exist by that time. Russia at the Summer Olympics has not yet been able to achieve such high positions.
  • Four more countries managed to lead the medal standings once in their entire history, and it was always their home competition. The leaders were France in 1900, Britain in 1908, Germany in 1936, and China in 2008.

Japan, by the way, at its home Olympics in Tokyo in 1964, took 3rd place in the team event.

Let us remind you that the medal standings are not formed from the total number of awards received. First of all, the gold medals of the Olympics are taken into account. And only in case of equality, silver and bronze are counted.

Summer Olympics Betting

Bookmakers, long before the start of the competition, began to accept bets on who will win the most gold medals and become the winner in the team medal standings. The lowest odds before the start of the Games were the chances of victory for the United States. Then, on the list of potential contenders - China, and then - Great Britain, and even then only the most inveterate fans of British sports will risk putting it seriously. Further quotes are hardly worth considering: the coefficients there are completely sky-high, including for the Russian national team.

You can also bet separately on who will win the most medals overall. However, in the hands, nothing fundamentally changes here.

Finally, you can bet on a more specific number of overall medals. The most attractive odds here are that the United States will get more than 125 medals, Germany - more than 47, and Norway will stop at 7-8 medals.

Experts from the Infostrada organization, which predicts the possible results of the Olympic competitions, gave the expected achievements of different teams during the 2016 Summer Olympics and presented a virtual medal standings. This forecast is compiled by Infostrada experts by analyzing the results of previous Olympics, championships and world cup competitions in various sports.

Let us remind you that it will take place next year in Brazil from 5 to 21 August. South America will be the home of such a large-scale sports event for the first time. Prior to this, the Brazilians have repeatedly stated their desire to host the Olympians in Rio de Janeiro, but they won this competition for the first time.

Forecast for the Olympic Games 2016

  1. Analysts give the first line of the overall team classification to the national team from the United States with a total of 99 won medals of varying degrees of honor (46 gold, 20 silver and 33 bronze).
  2. The specialists put the Chinese in second place with a total of 72 medals (31 gold, 27 silver and 14 bronze awards).
  3. The third place was given to athletes from the Russian Federation with 22 gold, 24 silver and 29 bronze medals.

The forecast of this organization is usually highly accurate - for example, before the London 2012 Olympics, Infostrada predicted 53 medals for the hosts of the event, and immediately before the games, slightly revised the forecast result and increased the number of medals to 67 awards. As you know, the final result was 65 medals won by athletes from England.

Representatives of national teams from France (with assets of 16 gold, 9 silver and 18 bronze medals), as well as German athletes (16, 16 and 18, respectively), also got into the top five leaders in the virtual medal standings.

According to forecasts, the first places will be shared by teams from the USA, China and Russia

The top ten will be formed with the participation of Australian (42 medals), English (48), Japanese (45), New Zealand (19) athletes and representatives of the team of the hosts of the future Olympic Games - Brazilians, for whom experts predicted 25 medals out of the total number of awards. This distribution of places between the representatives of New Zealand and Brazil is explained by the value of the medals: although the Brazilians, according to experts, will take the quantity, but the quality will be on the side of New Zealand (in terms of the number of gold medals).

Forecast for the 2016 Olympics for Ukraine

According to the published forecast, athletes from Ukraine at the future Olympics have a chance to win 24 medals, with which the country will take the 18th position in the team classification. Experts predict that the Ukrainian team will have 5 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze medals. The list of competitions, according to the results of which athletes from Ukraine can take prizes, include:

  • all-around,
  • high jump competition,
  • triple jump competitions,
  • boxing,
  • wrestling,
  • shooting,
  • canoeing.

Among the possible winners, Ukrainian synchronized swimming and diving teams, fencers and gymnasts are also mentioned.
